Cates and Galfond make Showdown semis

Thursday, 1 November 2012

Daniel “w00ki3z” Cates became the third man through to the PokerStars All-Star Showdown semi-final after defeating Swedish sensation, Alexander “Sussie Smith” Roumeliotis.

The match lasted for nine hours and after a number of twists and turns the American finally scooped the remainder of Alexander’s $100,000 starting stack.

Before the match the omens weren’t looking good for Cates as the last time he sat down for a high stakes challenge on PokerStars it was against another Swede: Viktor “Isildur1” Blom. In that match he saw his opponent finish the 2,500 with a $51,000 profit.

However, things went a little differently this time as Cates controlled a large portion of the battle, before edging through to face the winner of the epic Phil “MrSweets28” Galfond and Ben “Ben86” Tollerene match.

Galfond took it down after playing for more than ten hours against Tollerene. In total Galfond need 4,341 hands to dispatch his opponent, claim $100,000 and move on to face Cates on Saturday.

Tomorrow’s high stakes action will see Isaac Haxton take on Ben Sulsky in their semi-final match.
