Carlos Mortensen wins record third WPT event

Carlos Mortensen wins record third WPT event

Friday, 26 March 2010

Carlos Mortensen is best known for his victory in the 2001 World Series of Poker Main Event. He is still the only player to have won the WSOP main event and a WPT championship, but he’s added yet more records to his name.

Mortensen had two WPT titles under his belt when he reached the final table of the 144-strong WPT Hollywood Open, but has now added a third after beating Mike Mustafa heads-up. He now ties Gus Hansen for most WPT wins but tops the all-time WPT money list outright, adding the $400,000 first prize to $5.5m in winnings.

The last hand of Mortensen’s record-breaking title was a massive cooler in all fairness to his opponent – the two players got all the money in on a T96 board, with Mustafa holding the near nuts with T9. However, Mortensen’s 87 had flopped a straight which faded the four outs to take down the tournament.
The full list of prizes and payouts at the final table is as follows:

1st Place: Carlos Mortensen - $393,820
2nd Place: Mike Mustafa - $223,623
3rd Place: Frank Calo - $167,717
4th Place: Chris Bell - $124,966
5th Place: Ravi Raghavan - $105,234
6th Place: Jerry Payne - $88,791
