Carlos Mortensen leading his fifth World Poker Tour final at LAPC

The LA Poker Classic is always a poker pro’s favourite stop on the World Poker Tour circuit; not only is California a Vegas away from Vegas for many of the big names but Matt Savage once again provides a (in the words of Daniel Negreanu) “perfect” structure for the tournament.

With the last eighteen players left we were all-but-guaranteed a couple of stories to come out of the six-handed final table. Ordinarily, 2008 WPT Borgata winner Vivek Rajkumar going for his second title would be dominating news but Carlos Mortensen has made his record fifth WPT final table and with a big chip lead will be going for the fourth win.


Mortensen got most of his chips in one of the most brutal bad beats seen in the deep stages of a World Poker Tour event. Covering both Shannon Shorr’s red aces and James Carroll’s Kd-Kc with Qs-Qc in a three-way all-in, Mortensen hit his spade flush to ship a huge pot worth over four million chips. Currently he ties Gus Hansen with three WPT titles.


WSOP bracelet-winners Jason DeWitt, Allen Cunningham and David Baker were in contention right to the end but all missed out on the TV final table of six with “Bakes” bubbling in seventh. The chip counts for tonight’s final table are as follows:


Seat 1: Vivek Rajkumar – 5.185m
Seat 2: Darryll Fish – 2.275m
Seat 3: Gregory Brooks – 2.3m
Seat 4: Amir Lehavot – 4.115m
Seat 5: Steve Gross – 1.32m
Seat 6: Carlos Mortensen – 5.235m
