The first European Poker Tour (EPT) main event of Season 12 got underway yesterday from Barcelona and, when the final number of entrants had been counted and verified, 459 players had anted up for Day 1A.

Among the international selection of runners was more than 30 British players including Haresh Thaker with the London-based grinder managing to weave his way past the likes of Patrik Antonius, Isaac Haxton and John Juanda to earn a place in Day 2.

After picking up 104,200 chips, the Brit was able to lead a handful of compatriots including Simon Deadman, David Vamplew and Bluff Europe's own Dara O'Kearney into the second stages of the €5,300 buy-in main event.

Away from the UK-based participants and Imad Derwiche of France was the man to beat at the close of Day 1A. After scooping 170,000 chips, the tournament grinder managed to top the table ahead of Martin Vallo with 163,300 and Jess Liljegren holding 153,100.

Overall, the action on Day 1A was highly entertaining and, with more players expected to take to the felt on Day 1B, organisers are hopeful that yet more records will fall during the festival.
