Britain’s John-Paul Kelly wins WSOP Event #20

Friday, 12 June 2009

After a few near misses we finally have a British victory to celebrate at this year’s World Series. John-Paul Kelly outlasted 632 players including John Juanda, Andy Bloch, Allen Cunningham, Brandan Cantu, Jason Mercier and JC Tran to claim the $1,500 Pot Limit Hold ‘Em title.

At the start of the final table the main danger for Kelly appeared to be Erik Seidel who was looking for his 9th WSOP bracelet. It wasn’t to be for the 1988 Main Event runner up, as he busted out in 7th. Children in the area did benefit from Seidel’s good performance though as he donated all of his winnings in the event to Las Vegas schools.

After five hours of play at the final table it was left to Kelly and Germany’s Marc Tschirch to battle it out for the bracelet. The final hand saw Kelly raise with AQ and Tschirch call with A5. The flop brought a rainbow 8-5-4. Kelly continued betting and the German again called. The turn brought a beautiful Queen for Kelly who led out again. Tschirch moved all in and Kelly instantly called. The river brought a harmless two of clubs and bracelet was heading to England.

The final table positions and payouts were as follows:

1. John-Paul Kelly - $194,434
2. Marc Tschirch - $120,102
3. Jason Dewitt - $78,826
4. Kyle Carlston - $54,711
5. Aaron Virchis - $40,048
6. Tony Steward - $30,837
7. Erik Seidel - $24,919
8. Andrew Radel - $21,082
9. Ravi Raghavan - $18,637
