Monday, 19 October 2015

Veteran UK poker player Barny Boatman proved that age is nothing but a number over the weekend by winning a bracelet at the ongoing World Series Of Poker Europe (WSOPE) tournament series in Berlin.

After delighting the crowds inside the Rio All-Suite Las Vegas Hotel and Casino in 2014 by winning a World Series Of Poker (WSOP) bracelet via the $1,500 buy-in no-limit hold'em showdown Event #49, the 59-year-old is now a champion in Europe.

The win in Nevada saw the Londoner claim a jackpot of $546,080 as well as the affection of the rail and his triumph in Germany brought more of the same.

After coming close to another bracelet in Las Vegas this summer by finishing third in Event #42, Boatman was certainly in form heading into the WSOPE. A ninth-place finish in an Omaha event was followed by 61st in the €1,650 ($1,887) buy-in Event #4, the ‘Monster Stack’ no-limit hold‘em competition.

But, the best was yet to come as Boatman lined up against 502 others in the €550 ($622) buy-in pot-limit Omaha Event #7 and slowly progressed through the field before delivering a knockout blow on the final table.

Despite facing a tough set of opponents that included the likes of Doug Lee and Shannon Shorr, Boatman was solid throughout and eventually clinched the title after besting Grzegorz Grochulski heads-up.

Although starting the ultimate Spielbank match facing a two-to-one chip deficit, Boatman managed to quickly redress the balance and took down the final pot after his Qh J h Td 6d hit a straight. That hand was enough for the veteran to win the event, €54,725 ($61,990) in cash and the admiration of the world's poker community.
