Tom Dwan is an incredible man; easily as awesome as Phil Ivey. There, I’ve said it. In November 2009, just six months ago, Tom Dwan had lost over five million dollars to Isildur1 and semi-disappeared from online poker for a short period of time. The king was dead and the haters came out of the woodwork to tell everybody how they knew that spewy LAG would stop running hot one day.

Within a month, durrrr had conquered the $25/$50 to $200/$400 stakes and was back in his rightful place at the $100,000 buy-in tables, having won $1.9m of his bankroll back – and it was mostly in the hands of Phil Ivey and Patrik Antonius. Now he’s easily the biggest winner of 2010 with a staggering $7.3m profit since January according to HSDB. Since being almost destroyed by Isildur1 he has won over eight million dollars playing the toughest opponents in poker.


I ask simply: how?


Dwan plays poker unlike anyone else – when you see how he plays hands on High Stakes Poker you look at his hole cards and wonder what the hell he’s thinking; he plays like a $.25/$.50 fish who will happily call 3-bets and make them himself with anything that looks pretty.


But then you go post-flop, and he always has a hand. Whenever you think he must be full of crap and you play back at him, he shows up with the impossible nuts. Whenever you turn the nuts yourself his aggression diminishes. I don’t know how he does it but he plays poker like no one else and beats the best.


Anyway, I finished my dissertation in a week. It’s 10,000 words over 48 pages – if I get a 2:1 or better for it then it will be the crowning jewel in my history of last-minute revision and writing in education.
