Angell's Delight at UKIPT London
Monday, 13 October 2014
Brett Angell has scooped the biggest live score of his career after topping a field of 1,089 runners at the PokerStars UKIPT London Main Event.
The man from Middlesbrough started Sunday's action with the chip lead and worked his way through a tough final table to secure a bumper £115,083 payday.
It took a while for the action to warm up in the Grand Connaught Rooms with the first elimination not arriving until well into the afternoon. When Denmark's Rasmus Agerskov departed in eighth it opened up if not a floodgate then a steady stream of departures.
Hoping to become the UKIPT's first female winner, Caicai Huang followed just a hand after Agerskov, £17,800 to the good. Vladimir Troyanovskiy, who has over $2.5m in career earnings to his name added another £23,800 to his bankroll, after hitting the rail in sixth. The carnage continued with US pro Nick Davies ran his AQ into Angell's AK to exit in fifth place. After waiting three hours for the first player to hit the rail, it took fewer than 30 minutes for four to go!
Britain's Mark James then left in fourth after missing a flush draw against Switzerland's Fabrizio Fuchs' top pair. Sandro Mescola can be well pleased with his efforts following a very deep run. The 69-year-old Italian started the day as the short stack and impressively laddered his way to third place. He would fall at the hands of Angell whose top pair was plenty good enough send Mecola to the cashiers' cage. And with that we were heads up.
With both players nursing extremely deep stacks, Angell and Fuchs agreed an ICM based chop with £10,000 left on top. The 31-year-old Angell pocketed the extra cash after an almost two-hour heads up battle.
The final hand saw all the chip hit the middle with Fuchs well behind with A9 against Angell's AK. The board bricked out to give Angell the title, the trophy and £115,083.
Speaking to the PokerStars Blog after his triumph, Angell said, "I still work in IT and I'm going to carry on working in IT. I really enjoy playing but poker's too unpredictable. I've had the mickey taken out of me by my mates for the past two and a half years [about his runner-up finish at UKIPT2 Nottingham] so it's a good feeling to win one.”
That brings season four of the UKIPT to close. Roll on season five!
