Sheldon Adelson, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer for land-based casino and resort operator Las Vegas Sands Corporation, is reportedly lobbying the Spanish government to repeal its rules on online gambling.

According to a report from El Confidencial, Spain’s potential EuroVegas project could cost much more than was originally expected, which has prompted Adelson to ask the nation’s Prime Minister, Mariano Rajoy, to change its regulations regarding gambling over the Internet.

Adelson is allegedly pushing Rajoy to relax smoking laws that ban the activity indoors while additionally asking for more measures to be put in place regarding online gambling.

El Confidencial reported that Adelson’s legal team stipulated that they need ‘more satisfaction on online gaming’ and, more specifically, that they ‘need the [online gambling] bill repealed’.

Such an ultimatum would certainly put Spanish officials in a tough position as the new casino complex is expected to and create hundreds of jobs and bring a much needed financial boost to the Spanish economy.
