Actor Bill Maynard is well known for playing characters looking to make a fast buck, either as scheming Greengrass in Sunday evening snoozefest Heartbeat or as the eponymous Gaffer from the 1980s sitcom.

The 82-year-old has taken some of the best (or worst characteristics) from his most famous roles into real life, specifically to the poker tables. Maynard is now a regular at Maxims Casino in Coventry since suffering from a stroke and claims his new hobby has been a big boost to his health. The Yorkshireman told the Coventry Evening Telegraph, “It really has given me a new lease of life.”

Maynard, hasn't enjoyed too much success at the tables but the social aspect of the game appears to have done him the world of good.
