“Stats Geek” Negreanu Lists Top 10 WPT Players

Tuesday, 27 October 2009

One of Daniel Negreanu’s recent blog posts has seen him analyse data from World Poker Tour events to determine who on the circuit can lay claim to the title of “best WPT player.”

Admitting it’s not a huge sample size, Negreanu picked players who had partaken in 30 WPT events or more and assumed a ROI of at least $20,000 was needed in order to cover buy-in, accommodation, flights, spending money and taxes.

WSOP Main Event 2002 winner Carlos Mortensen leads the field with ROI, making an average of $107,000 for each WPT event he has entered. Negreanu sits in ninth place on $68k.

Casey Kastle leads the cashing tables, having made the money in 30% of the WPT tournaments he has entered. However, he is actually losing money with an ROI of $7,092.

The top ten players based on final table percentage is a star-studded list lead by Gus Hansen and featuring Scotty Nguyen, Phil Ivey, Steve Sung and Negreanu himself.

“Of the 176 players eligible with enough events played, only 56 of those have an ROI of $20,000 or more. Shockingly, of the 176 eligibly, only 90 of those actually have an ROI of over $10,000. That means there are 86 people out there who have played 30 or more events and are overall losers to the investment,” Negreanu concludes.
