The poker world has been shocked to hear about the death of David 'Chip' Reese, who died in his sleep aged 56. According to some reports, Reese had been suffering from pneumonia-like symptoms. Part of a generation in the seventies that challenged the established greats like Brunson, Amarillo Slim and Puggy Pearson, Chip was on his way to a Stanford business school in the early seventies when he first arrived in Las Vegas. He never made it to Stanford, instead dominating the cash games whilst earning the respect of contemporaries. Chip Reese was never one to seek out the spotlight that he would have undoubtedly garnered should he had tried to do so. Instead of playing the WPT or WSOP events with the aim of getting some air time, Chip would simply be the best cash game player in the world. A regular at The Big Game at the Bellagio, he was much liked by his fellow pros, According to lifelong friend Doyle Brunson, 'I knew him for 35 years, I never saw him get mad or raise his voice. 'He had the most even disposition of anyone I've ever met. He's certainly the best poker player that ever lived.' Accolade indeed, and completely deserved. It seems fitting that Reese did earn some of the more widespread recognition that a lifelong of poker merited after he won the inaugural $50,000 H.O.R.S.E World Series of Poker event, and his third bracelet. Chip Reese - one of the best the game has ever seen.
